Plan your pickup and your first stop
Dusseldorf, written Düsseldorf on every sign, lines the Rhine with an Umweltzone over the inner districts.
The Altstadt, the Königsallee and the MedienHafen promenade are walks. A campervan uses the Rhine bypass, the A57 toward the Lower Rhine, the A46 toward Wuppertal, or the A52 and A44. The airport sits north of the centre and has its own traffic pattern, separate from the old-town lanes.
A green Umweltplakette is required in the inner zone. Oberkassel on the left bank is residential and easy to enter by bridge, then hard to enjoy in a long vehicle. The Lower Rhine, once you are north on the A57, turns into open polder, Xanten and the Dutch border. That is the spacious exit.
Navigate to a motorway junction, not to the Rheinufer promenade. The last kilometres along the water look like a boulevard and behave like a bottleneck.
Have the green disc fitted before you cross the zone boundary. Fuel stations inside it are not a workaround.
Trade-fair dates at the exhibition grounds slow the northern approaches and the airport roads. If your arrival overlaps a large fair, expect that delay even though you never enter the Altstadt.
