Plan your pickup and your first stop
Düren stands on the Rur between Aachen and Cologne, and the campervan start is an industrial estate on the edge, the kind of wide street the Felix-Wankel-Straße belongs to, not the rebuilt market square.
The town was heavily reconstructed and drives more easily than a romantic old centre, but it is still not the point. The point is south: Nideggen, the Rursee, and the wooded Eifel.
Düren has no Umweltzone of its own. Cologne to the east and Aachen to the west do, so the green sticker matters if the A4 takes you into either city. North of Düren the Jülich Börde is open farmland. South, the reservoir road is the scenic one and the slow one.
If the itinerary includes Cologne or Aachen centres, fit the green Umweltplakette in Düren. Both zones sit on the A4 corridor.
The Rursee has signed viewpoints that are not overnight bays. Sleep at a campsite or Stellplatz in the valley towns, and expect summer weekends to be busy with local boats and cyclists.
Castle villages such as Nideggen often close their upper streets to through traffic. Believe the restriction; the lower car park is the visit.
