Plan your pickup and your first stop
Dortmund (Unna) means Unna, a Hellweg town east of Dortmund, gathered around the crossing of the A1 and the A44.
The handover lives on roads like the Provinzialstraße, at the edge of town, not on Dortmund's shopping street. Medieval Unna has a small old centre you can walk. It is not the driving story. The story is how quickly you are on a motorway.
Unna sits outside the Ruhr Umweltzone. Dortmund, to the west, is inside it, so the green sticker matters only if you turn that way and enter the city. East on the A44 runs toward Soest, Paderborn and eventually Kassel, through open farmland. South, the Möhne reservoir and the Haarstrang ridge are the first hills.
Make the motorway choice at the Unna junction before local signs pull you toward Dortmund. The A44 east is the clean holiday exit.
If you do go into Dortmund, the Umweltzone's green disc needs to be on the glass first. The boundary is the city, not the stadium you can already see in the distance.
The Möhnesee's south shore is a popular pause. Treat overnight stops as signed pitches only; the dam roads are a drive, not a campsite.
