ROOM FOR YOUR KIND OF TRIP
Think about who is coming and how you like to travel. Check sleeping spaces, travel seats, kitchen equipment and luggage storage when choosing your campervan.
Plan your pickup and your first stop
Dortmund sits in the Ruhr Umweltzone, and a campervan has nothing to do on the Westenhellweg.
The A40 is the harsh east-west road, the A1 and A2 carry the long axes, and the A45 is the line that climbs south into the Sauerland. That southern exit, toward the Bigge lake and the Winterberg country, is the one that starts to feel like a trip. North, the land flattens into the Münsterland.
A green badge is required in the urban zone. Match days around the stadium in the south add a separate kind of closure that a navigation app may notice late. The Westfalenpark and the city centre are walks, or train rides, after the van is on a ring road.
Fit the green Umweltplakette for the Ruhr zone before you roll. Several neighbouring cities share the same continuous area, so a 'short hop' can stay inside it for a long time.
Check whether the stadium is hosting a match or a concert on your exit day. The southern arterial is the casualty.
Sauerland pitches around the reservoirs fill on sunny weekends. Reserve, or plan the first night farther into the hills on a weekday pattern, and allow for low cloud on the plateau even when Dortmund is clear.
