Plan your pickup and your first stop
Cologne (Kerpen) puts the keys in Kerpen, a Rhein-Erft town west of the river, among reclaimed pits and commercial estates rather than beside the Dom.
Hüttenstraße's industrial belt is the character of the start: wide junctions, trucks, and quick access to the A4 and the A61 at Kreuz Kerpen. The cathedral is a decision you make later.
Kerpen itself is outside Cologne's Umweltzone. The green sticker becomes necessary when you drive east into the city. South on the A61 the Eifel and the Ahr valley open up. West, the A4 runs to Düren and Aachen, both of which have their own inner zones if you enter those centres. The first landscape, if you stay local, is lakes left by the mines and flat farmland.
Use Kreuz Kerpen as the decision point and pick the motorway there, rather than following signs for Köln Zentrum out of curiosity.
If Cologne is on the itinerary, fit the green Umweltplakette before you join the A4 east. The zone starts well before the cathedral towers are a useful landmark.
The Ville lakes attract local weekend traffic. A pitch on the water is a reservation in fine weather, and the access tracks are sometimes tighter than the approach road.
