Hiring a campervan in Cologne

Cologne straddles the Rhine inside a wide Umweltzone, and the campervan move is the Militärring and the motorway box, not the square in front of the cathedral.

The A3, A4, A1 and A57 do the long-distance work. Bridges will carry a normal motorhome; the problem is the streets that funnel you into the pedestrian core once you are off them.

A green Umweltplakette is part of driving the urban area, on both banks. East of the river the land lifts into the Bergisches Land, a quick change from port cranes to forest valleys. South is Bonn and the Rhine gorge. West is the Ville and the open-cast landscape toward Kerpen. None of those exits require a photo stop on the Domplatte.

A few things worth knowing

Set the navigation to a ring-road exit, not to the Dom. The last turn into the old centre is where tall vans get committed.

Carnival week changes the map. Streets close, and a pitch that was easy in February is not a plan during the parades. If your dates overlap, sleep outside the city.

The Umweltzone is easy to wander into from a bridge. Have the green disc fitted before you leave the motorway, even if you think you are only crossing.
