Hiring a campervan in Chemnitz

Chemnitz is the Saxon city at the foot of the Erzgebirge, and the campervan start that makes sense is on the western side of town, in districts such as Altendorf, rather than a lap of the Karl Marx monument.

The A4 skims the south of the city on its way between Erfurt and Dresden. The A72 is the road that turns south into the mountains toward Hof and the Vogtland.

Chemnitz does not run an inner-city sticker scheme. The limit in the Ore Mountains is gradient, weather and the width of spa-town streets in places such as Annaberg and Oberwiesenthal. Those towns are the destination. The pedestrian core back in Chemnitz is a short walk if you want it, not the driving loop.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Leave toward the A72 while you still have daylight if the first night is in the mountains. The upper villages lose the sun early and the last kilometres are slow.

  2. 02

Do not expect a pitch in the monumental centre. The workable overnights are edge Stellplätze and valley campsites, and winter weekends around the ski slopes book up in a way a Tuesday in the city does not.

  3. 03

Watch for wood-truck traffic on weekday mornings on the valley roads, and for ice in the shaded cuttings well into spring.
