Plan your pickup and your first stop
Caen is the practical capital of a D-Day campervan trip.
William the Conqueror’s castle and the abbeys deserve a walking hour, but the van comes into its own on the coast: Sword Beach, the canal at Pegasus Bridge, and the battery sites strung along the Calvados shore. Ouistreham, at the mouth of the canal, is also the French end of the vehicle ferry from England, so some trips genuinely begin here with the van already aboard.
Normandy is not Provence. The roads are hedged, the weather changes by the tide, and cider country replaces olive country. A tall motorhome meets tractors and oncoming campers in the bocage. Distances between museums are short and the visiting is slow, which suits a vehicle you can lunch in when a shower crosses the plain.
Memorial sites have coach hours. Arrive at opening with the smaller vehicle if you hope to park on site; otherwise leave the motorhome at the pitch and use a scheduled stop.
Tide and weather shape the beach day more than the clock. A pitch behind the dunes is a better plan than a seafront street in Arromanches.
The ferry terminal at Ouistreham has its own traffic on sailing days. Do not cut the timing fine if the van itself is boarding, and do not confuse the terminal with a sightseeing stop in Caen’s abbey quarter.
