Hiring a campervan in Bremen

Bremen's market square and the Schnoor are a maze of brick lanes, so a campervan day in Bremen begins on the eastern side of the city, where industrial streets meet the A1, rather than beside the Roland.

The Weser is the landmark you follow out. North, the A27 runs toward Bremerhaven and the coast. South, the A1 heads for the lowlands and, much later, the Ruhr.

The inner city keeps an Umweltzone. A green badge is the rule if the route dips inside that core. You can see the town hall without driving past it. Worpswede and the Teufelsmoor, just north-east, are the artistic bog country people mean when they talk about a soft first evening out of the city.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Put the green Umweltplakette on before any fuel stop that your map places downtown. The boundary is tighter than the city limits.

  2. 02

The Schnoor has no hidden campervan route. Use a park-and-walk on the ring side.

  3. 03

North Sea pitches and the dyke villages fill when the weather turns warm. Fix the first night on the coast or in the moor before you join the A27, and watch for wind on the exposed Weser marsh if you are in a tall van.
