Hiring a campervan in Bordeaux

Bordeaux’s limestone centre, rebuilt in the eighteenth century and now partly calmed for trams and walkers, is one of the better cities in France to visit without the vehicle.

A campervan trip that starts or pauses here should assume a low-emission zone and a centre that does not want a tall van on the quays at aperitif hour. See the river, then leave for the vines.

The left bank runs north through the Médoc toward the estuary. The right bank holds Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau. West, the forest opens onto Arcachon and the Atlantic dunes. Each of those is a proper day’s drive with a different pitch at the end. Trying to sample all three between lunch and the ring road is how a Bordeaux day goes sour.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Check the emissions rules before you aim a navigation pin at the Chartrons or the centre. The pleasant way in is by tram or on foot from an outer stop.

  2. 02

Harvest weeks fill the village roads with tractors and temporary signs. Go slowly, and do not block a cellar door with a motorhome while you decide on a tasting.

  3. 03

The Atlantic side is windier than the Garonne. If the night is on the dune edge, a lower van sleeps more quietly than a high one.
