A campervan is clumsy on those seafront streets, especially in summer when the parking real estate is measured in small cars. Use the town for the view and the swim, then take the van along the Basque coast or inland toward Espelette and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

The weather is oceanic, not Provençal. Rain arrives sideways, the light changes in an hour, and the hinterland is green, hilly and proud of its peppers and timbered farmhouses. Spain is close: Hendaye and the border sit a short drive south, but San Sebastián’s old quarter is its own walking problem, not an extension of the Biarritz promenade.
