Hiring a campervan in Reykjavik
Reykjavik is a small capital you can walk across, which is also why a large motorhome is awkward in the centre.

The campervan decision is which road you leave on. North goes toward Borgarnes, Snæfellsnes and eventually the Ring Road’s northern half. East goes toward the Golden Circle and then the south-coast waterfalls, glaciers and black-sand beaches. Both are real days, and neither is improved by a lap of the harbour first.
Keflavik is the international airport, a peninsula drive away. The domestic airport is inside the city and is its own handover. Weather still rules after you have done all of that correctly. A city depot is not every residential street with a view of Esja.
A few things worth knowing
- 01
Ask the depot for the exit toward your actual route, and use it. The old centre, the pond and the church are a walk after the van is parked, not a driving tour.
- 02
Book the first campsite in the direction you are going. Summer nights fill the Golden Circle and the first south-coast towns.
- 03
Separate the international airport transfer from the day’s sightseeing. If you landed at Keflavik and then collected in the city, you have already driven; do not add a peninsula loop on top.
