Plan your pickup and your first stop
Akureyri is the town at the end of Eyjafjörður, small, northern, and useful precisely because it is not Reykjavik.
A campervan collected here puts Mývatn, the northern approach to Dettifoss and the western reaches of the north coast within a sane day’s drive. Getting here from Keflavik by road is most of a Ring Road day, so people who start in Akureyri have usually flown domestic and skipped that haul.
Winter days are short and the mountain roads around the fjord close in weather. Summer nights barely get dark, which makes it tempting to drive too far. Services along the Ring Road east and west of town come with long gaps. A handover in Akureyri is the town depot, not every farmstay in the valley.
Check the road conditions for the day, not the brochure weather. A closed mountain road east or west of the fjord is the whole plan until it opens.
Book campsites, especially in summer, and do not treat a viewpoint or a church car park as an overnight. The rules are national and local, and they are enforced.
Fuel in town before a Mývatn or northeast day. Wind on the fjord can make a short drive feel longer than the kilometres, so leave a margin before dark in winter.
