Plan your pickup and your first stop
Egilsstadir is the east Iceland service town beside Lagarfljót, and collecting a campervan here flips the usual circuit.
You begin among the east fjords and Hallormsstaður’s forest instead of arriving tired from the southwest. Seyðisfjörður, over a mountain road, is the port for the international ferry; the van needs its own place on that ship if you are using it. Either way around the Ring Road, Reykjavik is most of a day’s drive, with weather in charge of whether it is a pleasant one.
Roads between the fjord villages are smaller, steeper and more often closed than the postcard suggests. Shops and fuel are thinner than around Reykjavik. A handover in Egilsstadir is the town collection, not a desk in every fjord.
Look at the mountain-road report before you drive to Seyðisfjörður or between fjords. The closure is the itinerary until it lifts.
If you are meeting the international ferry, book the vehicle and time the drive over the pass with a large buffer. Missing the ship is not a delay you absorb in town.
Carry fuel and a booked site. East Iceland rewards people who stop early, and it is unkind to a plan that needs a shop at every headland.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
