Hiring a campervan in Heraklion

Heraklion is the city collection on the central north coast of Crete.

It is a working port and a busy street grid, not a resort promenade. Knossos sits just inland and is a visit on foot from a car park that can take the van, not a crawl through the ruins. The driving worth doing starts when you leave: east toward the softer coast, or south over the island toward smaller harbours and the Messara plain.

Because Heraklion is also a ferry city, people stack a dawn sailing, a palace visit, and a south-coast sunset on one date. That is three days wearing one number. If the van came across from the mainland, let the port day be the port day. If you collected in town after a flight, you still should not point a motorhome at the market streets and hope.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Give the arrival day to the port or the drive from the flight, and put Knossos on a morning when you are not also boarding a ship.

  2. 02

Head east or south. Do not expect Chania's beaches before dinner on day one.

  3. 03

Ask where this vehicle may sleep along the eastern coast. Resort towns fill their legal pitches in summer.
