Plan your pickup and your first stop
Chania is a city collection on the western end of Crete, not the regional map and not an airport desk.
The old harbour is for walking. Venetian lanes and the waterfront will not absorb a motorhome, so the useful start is the road that leaves town toward the west coast or inland toward the White Mountains. The approach to Samaria and the south-coast villages climbs on a mountain road that is slow, narrow in places, and a full plan of its own.
Crete is an island, so any arrival that is not already a flight into the west still involves a ferry or a long drive from Heraklion's side. Vehicle ferries from the Greek mainland run on schedules you should read before the week is locked. Once you are in Chania with the van, stay on Crete. Hopping to another island mid-week means giving the vehicle back to a ship and losing a day to the port.
Judge the van's height against the mountain roads you actually want, especially if the south coast is on the list.
Leave the van outside the harbour district and walk in. The waterfront is a destination, not a place to crawl in a motorhome.
Ferry bookings, when you need them, belong to the day you enter or leave Crete, and they sit outside the rental agreement.
