Plan your pickup and your first stop
Crete is a region-sized island, not a suburb of Athens.
The north coast has the faster road linking Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion. The south is another kind of driving: gorges, small harbours, and lanes that climb and drop. A campervan week that tries both coasts and an eastern beach will spend its best hours in the seat. Pick a half of the island and go deeper.
Getting the vehicle onto Crete is a ferry from the Greek mainland, unless you collect a van that is already on the island. Those are different trips. The ship has a vehicle quota, a height line, and a departure that will not wait because a scenic road ran long. Once you are on Crete, stay until the week says otherwise. Island-hopping with a van is a port hobby, not a side quest.
Choose the north highway or the south coast as the spine of the week, and treat the other as a single side day.
Book the ferry for the vehicle on the entry and exit days, and keep those days free of gorge hikes.
Mountain villages often turn tighter than the map suggests. If the van is long, stay on routes meant for through traffic.
