Hiring a campervan in Cork

Cork is the south’s main city, built on an island in the Lee and tied together by bridges.

A campervan collected here should be pointed at the coast rather than at the English Market. Kinsale and the first of West Cork are close. Killarney, Kenmare and the Beara or Kerry peninsulas are real days on roads that narrow as soon as they become beautiful. The Ring of Kerry is a loop you start further west, not a lap of Cork city.

Driving is on the left. Cork Airport is a separate airfield south of town; this page is the city handover, one depot rather than every quayside neighbourhood. Holiday traffic in summer fills the westbound roads by late morning.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Leave the city toward the night’s site before you add a peninsula. Kinsale can be night one; the Healy Pass should not be an afterthought on collection day.

  2. 02

Check the width of any coastal village you plan to enter. If the van is long, park at the edge and walk in.

  3. 03

Book summer sites, drive on the left from the first junction, and give rain a slower pace. The south coast looks mild and still produces narrow, wet roads.
