Athens Airport is the collection point, on the eastern side of the Attica basin rather than in the streets under the Acropolis.

Landing and driving away can share an afternoon if the briefing is prompt, but the first useful mile is the motorway, not a lap of the centre. From this curb the Peloponnese, the north, and the ferry ports are all a conscious choice of direction.

Island travel still needs a ship. The airport does not put you on Crete, Rhodes, or Corfu. A vehicle ferry from the Athens area is a separate booking, and sailing times rarely line up with a bank of flights. Many travelers sleep a first night on the mainland, then roll to the port in daylight with the van already checked against the ship's length and height limits.

A few things worth knowing
