Hiring a campervan in Troodos

The Troodos is the mountain interior of Cyprus: pine slopes, stone villages and a high point at Olympus that can hold snow when the coast is mild.

Painted churches and the monastery roads are the cultural stops. Driving is a sequence of bends. Every extra metre of vehicle length shows up when a coach appears in the opposite direction.

You climb here from the coast with supplies already aboard. Limassol and Nicosia are the usual doors. The villages — Omodos, Platres, Kakopetria — are the places you stop to walk, with the square often smaller than it looked in a photograph.

A few things worth knowing

Fill water and buy food before you climb. Village shops are small and close early.

In winter, ask about tyres and the Olympus road before you leave Limassol or Nicosia.
