Plan your pickup and your first stop
Rovaniemi stands on the Kemijoki near the Arctic Circle, and a campervan collected in town is already in Lapland.
The winter souvenir trade is loud; the driving reasons are quieter and further out. North, the road runs toward Sodankylä and, much later, Inari. East and west, fell roads and small villages replace the city grid quickly. Distances between fuel stops grow, and a day’s plan that looked modest in Helsinki becomes a full winter drive.
The airport is a separate collection point outside town. From the capital, the road here is long enough that most people who start in Rovaniemi have flown. Midnight sun and polar night split the year. A town handover is not a key desk at every riverside hotel.
Plan shorter winter legs than the summer map suggests, and be parked before the darkness is complete. Northern lights are a night-time hope, not an appointment you drive toward at midnight.
Refuel in town before a fell day, and keep a margin. Reindeer on the road are a reason to slow down, especially where the forest meets the highway.
Book sites that can take a van in the Christmas and northern-lights seasons. A car park beside a glass igloo is not your overnight unless the place has explicitly agreed.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
