ROOM FOR YOUR KIND OF TRIP
Think about who is coming and how you like to travel. Check sleeping spaces, travel seats, kitchen equipment and luggage storage when choosing your campervan.
Plan your pickup and your first stop
Helsinki is a compact capital on a peninsula, and the campervan belongs on the ring roads out of it.
Senate Square, the design shops and the Suomenlinna ferry are a walking day; the fortress island takes passengers, not your van. The useful drive starts north toward the lake country, or west if Turku and the archipelago are the plan. A motorhome in the central grid is a slow lesson in kerbs and trams.
Helsinki Airport, in Vantaa, is a separate handover north of the city. Collecting in town means you have chosen the streets and the harbour side. Ferries to Tallinn and Stockholm leave from specific terminals and carry a vehicle only when it has a place. A city depot is not every waterfront neighbourhood.
Leave the centre before you look for the first night. Ask the depot for the ring-road exit that matches your direction, north or west, and follow that rather than a quay-to-quay route.
If the van is boarding a ferry, book the vehicle, confirm the terminal and arrive with the buffer the operator asks for. A foot passenger ticket is a different journey.
In winter, budget for ice and an early dusk even in the south. In summer the light lasts, which is not a reason to skip a booked site.
