Hiring a campervan in Lisbon

Lisbon is a city of hills, viewpoints, and streets that climb harder than a map's contour suggests.

Tram tracks, cobbles, and tight corners belong to the historic districts, and a campervan is a guest there at best. The collection named Lisbon means you start in that city, so the first skill is leaving without a wrong turn up a grade the van should not have taken. Viewpoints are walks from a sensible car park. They are not drive-through photo stops.

The Algarve coast is the contrasting trip: beaches, cliffs, and roads that do not stand on end the way Lisbon's do. It lies well to the south. A week that wants both needs a travel day across the middle of Portugal, not an evening hop. Sintra and the Cascais side are nearer, and they bring narrow roads and summer traffic of their own. The hills do not stop at the city boundary.

A few things worth knowing

  1. 01

Plot the exit from Lisbon before handover day, and keep the van off the steepest historic streets.

  2. 02

Give the Algarve its own days if it is on the trip. The coast will not feel coastal if you arrive from the hills after dark.

  3. 03

Sintra's lanes are a separate caution. If the van is long, park and continue by other means.
