The Algarve is the southern coastal region of Portugal, a long shore between a windy Atlantic west and quieter eastern wetlands.
Cliffs, fishing harbours, and resort towns line a coast that stays mostly gentle compared with Lisbon's hills. A campervan fits the idea of the place: sleep near a beach, move a short distance, repeat. Around Sagres the wind and the cliffs take over. The middle is busier. The east is calmer water and sandbars you do not drive onto. None of that resembles the steep streets of the capital.
Lisbon is a hill city well to the north. Treating the Algarve as a morning and the capital as the afternoon turns a coastal week into a motorway week. Collect for the shore if the shore is the trip. Faro Airport is the usual flight door. Once you are rolling, the subject is east or west along this coast, not a climb into Lisbon.
Choose west, centre, or east for most of the nights. The shore is long enough to waste the week doubling back.
Some motorway sections use electronic tolls. Sort out how the rental vehicle handles them before you need the fast road.
If you also want Lisbon's hills, give them their own days. A dusk blast from the beach will not feel like either place.
