ROOM FOR YOUR KIND OF TRIP
Think about who is coming and how you like to travel. Check sleeping spaces, travel seats, kitchen equipment and luggage storage when choosing your campervan.
Plan your pickup and your first stop
Johannesburg spreads across the highveld at serious altitude, inland and uninterested in a beach.
A campervan collected here is for the drive east toward Kruger, for the Magaliesberg and Pilanesberg to the northwest, or for the long N1 south through the Karoo toward Cape Town, which is at least two hard days. Afternoon thunderstorms in summer are normal. The city itself is vast, and the campervan should be on a highway out of it rather than touring the centre.
OR Tambo is east, in Kempton Park, and is a separate handover that often suits a Kruger exit better. Driving is on the left. Use booked caravan parks rather than a city street. A handover is one depot, not every suburb in Gauteng.
If Kruger is the goal, leave east and stop well before the gate rather than arriving at dusk. If the Cape is the goal, break the N1 into daylight legs with booked parks.
Do not overnight on a residential street or at a random shopping centre. Choose a proper caravan park and arrive while the office is open.
Drive on the left, allow for summer storms, and keep the first day’s distance shorter than the altitude and the traffic suggest.
Your next adventure is a few clicks away.
