Plan your pickup and your first stop
Durban is a subtropical port on the Indian Ocean, humid in a way the Cape is not, with a beachfront that is not a motorhome strip.
A campervan collected in the city is for the coast north or south, or for the drive inland to the Drakensberg, which is a mountain day rather than a backdrop. Zululand and the Hluhluwe direction are further still. The Golden Mile is something you visit once the van is parked. Sugar cane and summer storms are the ordinary scenery of the exit roads.
King Shaka sits well north of the beach and has its own page. Driving is on the left. Johannesburg’s highveld and Cape Town’s wind are different countries of feeling, and different distances. A city handover is not every beachfront block.
Point the first night north, south or inland, and leave the Golden Mile to a walk. Do not learn the van’s width in beachfront traffic.
Give the Drakensberg its own day and a site at the right altitude. A dawn departure from the coast is more pleasant than an afternoon climb in summer heat.
Book the park, drive on the left, and keep valuables out of sight. Summer rain can slow the N2; let it.
